| Exercept of the story written by Violeta Scotto.

I've been trying to finish a cloud-themed picture book for a number of years now.

The project started as an individual project and along the way I found friends who proposed changes: Gisela Dias (graphic designer) and Violeta Scotto (writer).

The book Nuvens is composed of 32 pages, landspcape format. The project with Gisela and Violeta was designed to participate in the Children's Book Contest in Mexico. Currently the project is on hold for various reasons that have caused delays, such as an accident I had in 2017, trips to Europe and then these pandemic years that seemed endless.

I'll try to put some parts of the initial studies done by the three of us... with my roughs of some double pages, layouts by Gisela Dias and parts of the texts written by the Argentine writer Violeta Scotto.

Building painting tools

Many years ago, when studying Fine Arts in Bologna, in 1986, I was thinking how would be the artist of the future. During a discussion with Yuji (a Japanese friend) in the Fine Arts School corridors. I imagined painting with light tools, computers and things like that... certainly computers and software have made great strides and now one can draw and paint on the computer.

Even though tools and interfaces can improve and get closer to the process of creation, this process should be closest to the art world, without too much technical jargon and more practical sense.
Nowadays the graphic tablets have become a true display of light where we can draw and paint directly onto the canvas. Unfortunately the software is too complex to master, in my opinion, because they use the beginning of man-machine metaphor... well ... we'll see the future!

Dry Brushes | Strokes samples of my first digital brushes experiments, 2008.

My research on digital brushes based started in 2008 (but with some interruptions and changes of mind). Initially I looked closely how the dynamic array of brushes works. Brushes can be very complex in terms of construction and, in fact, I have created several types for watercolors, acrylics and oil and to some designed to woodcut.

Recently I am simplifying many concepts about the brush behaviour, trying to figure out how to get the desired effect with minimum effort and maximum economy in the brushes construction. I've designed a specialized series on pencils and I'm successful to get an excellent match with real pencils; high-performance features as regards the processing of a drawing on computer. Keep in mind that if the brush is complex, it takes a long processing time to the computer, and this produces a kind of delay while you draw. In the gallery I show some examples and drawings of this brushes design process.

I always remember that I have to write more often on my blog... after all, it summarizes and mirrors my in progress in many areas and interests, which by the way are many... it gets a bit distracting ;). Lately I've been involved in some projects that have taken my interest and mainly my time, all of which are linked in a certain way to my illustration and digital painting activity using free software.

It is really sad to note that there is a common sense or a kind of conventional wisdom that assumes that the brand, type, price of the pencil is more important to the artist who wields it and uses it.

Personally, I am interested in the instruments themselves and a large part of my research is focused on something that was done in the old artistic botteghe of the Renaissance, discovering and improving new processes and methods but in a digital environment. My objects of study have been to better understand the relationship between the digital, its instruments, techniques, applications, which can expand and improve an artist's knowledge and expertise.

I don't believe that there are quick, easy ways or even formulas to be able to work as an artist in the digital age... there are indeed reference paths that are often being dictated by the most fashionable or cutting-edge digital tools.

Also during 2012 and 2013 I created a good portfolio of illustrations, based on real work done for some magazines dedicated to new technologies mainly. Making new and interesting images for a theme like internet technology and the like was certainly a challenge with each new story or cover, but I had the opportunity to improve many aspects of my style and solutions using the free software I chose for this process, the MyPaint and the Gimp.

Over the last few months I have been involved in several projects and ideas, mainly the methods and paradigms of digital painting. So far I've filled pages and pages of text and notes, sometimes a little mismatched, sometimes with commonalities, but the research work keeps getting more and more interesting and provocative.

I am personally interested in the methods of emulating many pictorial techniques to gain greater knowledge of the digital medium in the sense of proposing traditional things and implementing the traditional in digital with something that comes from this medium.

Test brushstrokes with various types of brushes and dynamics for wet painting.

The idea was to study traditional pictorial techniques and implement this in the digital field and using free tools. But in the end I realized that we can think in a broader way, that is, it is better to study the techniques in a way that we make use of the digital medium more freely and regardless of the origin of the software and operating systems.

An important issue linked to these questions is the fact of painting mimics or the instruments and presets that try to emulate a certain type of painting or effect. After much thought on the subject, I came to the conclusion that the mimics of painting in themselves are neither good nor bad, they depend on the creative use that each one of us makes of them. However, the mimics of painting deprive the artist of a better interaction with the digital medium and the basic instruments of digital painting.

I personally believe that working directly on the tools and building your own ways of painting is the best solution for the path of an illustrator or artist in digital media.

<img alt="Mixed dry and wet technique of watercolor in digital media with a support similar to Ingres paper, created in Gimp."src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_kV5jKn1m24/UzzN3DuzHcI/AAAAAAAAGSk/9vMFgo4hu5s/s1600/ watercolor-tests-ingres-paper-simulation.jpg" title="A mix of dry and wet watercolor techniques in digital media with a support similar to Ingres-type paper, created in The Gimp." width="" />

Mixture of dry and wet watercolor technique in digital media with a support similar to Ingres paper, created in Gimp.

In a natural and real process of painting or drawing, we are used to thinking and treating the pictorial medium according to its own and natural schemes, that is, they are linked in some way to traditional means and techniques of treatment, for example, the pencil and the stump and their relationships with the support used. I have already mentioned in the past, but much of the aspect that we understand about the appearance of certain pictorial techniques are largely linked to their supports and another part due to the instrument itself, that is, the relationship of the pencil or certain ink with a type of paper , there is no trace of graphite without thinking about the relationship of friction with the paper. So, imagine drawing on the glass with a pencil, in the first place the line will have difficulty being fixed and in the second place it is likely that it will not be anything like the aspect that we consider the usual.

Studying some watercolor effects in digital media and how to propose them in a simple and practical way, test done in Gimp.

In this sense, I believe that it is more important to understand well the concepts of each technique and thus propose an equivalent with something else that originates in the digital environment, using ready-made mimics we will be shortening many processes but at the same time producing a certain homogenization in aspects of this or that technique and a large part of learning is lost, which could be useful to innovate or improvise our style.

This is the map project for a small archaeological museum in Vitória do Espirito Santo. This project in particular I'm already detailing in the blog I keep for free software, Forks And Drills. The map was very complicated to carry out and I had to think of methods and ideal solutions for the software and machines I currently have. The weight of this map opened in the image editor exceeded 4Gb which clearly prevented working on it entirely, so I had to divide it into several sections. This enabled a better work in the details and without complicating the issues of agility regarding the software I used (MyPaint and Gimp). But it also created other problems like that of maintaining the standard treatment and continuity of colors.

This is the suite of previous post about blending modes on Gimp... today while I was drawing with the my pencil series I discovered a curious possibility ... When you change increase drastically the size of the brushes of this series these become very useful for the watercolor techniques.

In this example... based in the Botticelli self-portrait I've set the size brush, Forks | Pencil Color 1, above 500 and the opacity very low, under 40%.

After we need to correct a bit the saturation of colors... this can made with Levels or different layers above the watercolor layer, for instance a layer desaturated with overlay mode.

News about this method

Just following the process with pencils brushes I did some new brushes... but a bit large, 256 pixels, mainly thinking in the focus of the stains. When you increase the brush the focus or sharpness is lost.

Gray strokes painted with Overlay mode directly and some parts I've used a transparent layer in overlay mode.

I'm doing many experiments with the blend filters with my round brushes. My focus is mainly to know the possibilities to build cool transparencies directly on the brush... that's possible changing the blend mode when your brush is active on the tool options slide.

The mode that I've used to create these images are mainly "overlay" and "hue". The approach is very simple... first you can drawing some strokes in gray values with normal mode active. The canvas can be white or transparent. The next step is change the mode of your brush to "overlay" and to apply the colors on the gray strokes. Is more efficient to have the opacity low between 50 and 70%.

Another interesting possibility is to have a colored canvas and to apply the strokes with 'overlay' mode active in the brush (see below figure).

I finally had some time to write this article about the illustrations I made for the ARede Yearbook for Bit Social and produced by Mandacaru Design from São Paulo.

The yearbook is dedicated to NGO and private sector projects related to the Internet and new technologies. Within this annual scenario are many projects dedicated to communities, schools and complementary courses where free software is predominantly used.

The illustration work was well articulated and organized by Manaíra Abreu - Mandacaru Design.

Some of the illustrations, mainly the A3 ones and the long ones that covered two pages took a long time due to the great amount of detail. Initially, I proposed sketches that were seen and approved by the responsible staff and served as a general line for the realization of the illustrations.

I produced a color palette in RGB safe for CMYK, this to maintain the same range of colors between the various illustrations.

A particularly detailed and lengthy job was done on the lettering where I tried to create different solutions depending on the word.

For those interested in some of the technical aspects of creating these illustrations, you can find them in the Forks And Drills.

The Forks And Drills project, which I have together with Mozart Couto on free software, applied to digital graphic arts, it is occupying a good part of my productive and creative energy. I recently made several brush works for Gimp by an artist and professor from Slovakia, L'ubomir Zabadal.
The series of works that I present below have all been done digitally using Zabadal's brushes with the mouse only.

I've been experimenting with the possibility of collecting images for some time now... it all started many years ago when I still had the habit of cutting out images from magazines. Sometimes I cut them out entirely, selecting just a few parts, to build a large repertoire of dedicated images (positions of hands, feet, faces, eyes, trees... etc).

A friend of mine, Anna Marchi, helped me to create a small binder of clippings, organized by subject. She worked at the time in the municipal library of Imola.

The remains of these clippings stayed, sometimes for months, in my studio waiting for some use, until one day I had the idea of using them to build collages.

Collage and Calligraphy with remains of clippings...

If anyone is curious to see the result of these collages, they can look on my instagram, at collage collection.

Speaking of binders... I had the opportunity to do a little research on Ray Bradbury on Youtube and I found many interesting videos about him and his work as a writer. The video below in particular is very beautiful, as it makes us see a little bit of this writer's universe and how he constructed his science fiction stories. There are some scenes in his work studio full of things and so many binders, but so many... (in the '50s and '60s there was nothing like the Internet and the resources we have today in terms of information networks). Taking advantage of the tip... one of his most beautiful books in my opinion is The Illustrated Man (The Tattooed Man), 1951, which was adapted for cinema in 1969.

Nowadays we have several tools that could very well replace my image binder like Pinterest].

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Pinterest is the sharing of collections between users... in this mode you can follow the collections of several users and incorporate them into yours and vice versa. It's actually a big common binder organized by themes (described by the album owners).

From my point of view as an illustrator, getting to know the 'imaginary' of other artists, illustrators, common people, who by hobby or profession collect images is very important. This constitutes an immense repertoire of references for new ideas, to understand where your imagination collides or coincides with that of others... everything in terms of images.

In early 2011 I started to think about creating a working group dedicated to the universe of illustrated books and focused on this idea of hybrid books... so I talked to friends here in Brazil and some Italian illustrators, an Italian editor friend of mine (who referred me to some writers ) and from there the first attempts to accomplish something began, this gave birth to the group called Red Rhino. It is formed by me, Alessandra Tadiotto, writer, Lorenza Trojan and Oto Maki, both illustrators.

The initial work was very complicated and we had to organize ourselves in a very different way than the traditional way, since each of us lives in different parts of the world... so emails, talks and chats. Nowadays we already have a well-perfected method and this is the product of more than 1 year of hard hard and sweaty work.

In October 2011, we finished our first book in a series about feeding little ones. They are cardboard books predisposed for finger puppets. We are trying to sell this project in the US market through my agent Anna Johnson.

The idea of hybrid books, as I imagined, is unfortunately not very applicable to the market of today... the book is very expensive and with many difficulties in production and logistics, as many of these special books are produced almost entirely in China. But I still haven't abandoned the idea of producing these books in super limited editions in handmade mode and treating them as multiples.

Although we have good ideas and quality human material, it is not easy to enter this market and this is true for many countries today, we are in a time of crisis and we need to innovate, renew solutions. Even France itself, which is one of the most interesting markets for the picture book, is also suffering.

In the sense of renewal and innovation, Alessandra Tadiotto recently provoked me: creating a website for our project where we would produce digital books for free distribution, this to promote our work. I thought the idea was great and we are starting talks on creating the website and a plan to prepare the whole project, which will probably open later this year.

The idea is very simple, initially to create a blog, where we will talk about various things related to illustrated books, post new projects, stories and studies of the "in progress" of the realization of illustrations and layouts of these tales.

Personally, I have several projects for which I would like to make them available in this form: a story about Nuvens and another about Jardim das Amoreiras.

I did extensive research on the different types of binding or presentation solutions for books. It's really fun to see that a book can have different formats and packaging solutions.

The research collected a multitude of sources, a lot of material we find directly on the internet, on YouTube. There I found a multitude of artists who have great solutions in this regard... and almost always adopt workshops to disseminate their ideas and concepts. The YouTube playlist I make available here has over 3 hours of video: Books Possibilities. All this research gave rise to a series of hybrid book concepts, as I called them, where various types of formats and solutions converge.

Texture made with clipboard pencil from some scribbles made with a pencil brush.
In Blend Mode Difference was used.

Some time ago, Mozart Couto suggested that I experiment with brushes directly from the clipboard... Today, looking at how Manga Studio works with some types of fillings, I started to carry out the first tests. My idea is to understand how I can best use clipboard pencil to create interesting patterns.

This pattern was created starting from a very simple scheme, inspired by one of the brushes dedicated to pencils using as Difference mode, which according to preliminary tests seems to be the ideal mode to create textures with the clipboard.

In the example above I used a Colorize and then I applied the brush again, thus creating these differences between types of hues.

Digital woodcut made in Gimp with my brushes for this technique. Only the mouse was used.

Woodcutting is widely emulated in many digital environments and some programs, such as vector drawing (Illustrator, for example).
In my opinion the technical quality of these solutions are very interesting and beautiful but at the same time they suffer from a homogenization in the style and in the intrinsic quality of the works.
I prefer a more essential technique and more in tune with the great masters of woodcuts for literature from Cordel.
I also prefer to work with rasters, that is, images with pixels. For this I created a series of brushes in the program I use for my work, the Gimp, but which can also be done in Photoshop. The principle of brushes is basically maintained, but with some differences between these two softwares.

The woodcut technique is intertwined with the invention of the press itself... it was invented in China in the same period that paper appeared there. Many famous incisors and artists have already used this technique... the most virtuous in my view is Albrecht Durer, in fact I had the opportunity to see some of his incisions printed in the Cabinet degli Uffizzi di Firenze and they are really impressive.

The Carrying of the Cross, The Great Passion, Albrecht Durer, 1498, 28x39 cm.

The interesting thing is that the woodcut was widely used to illustrate the first cheap books of the modern era and many in the early printing press. I've been doing research on the illustrated book on the web and I've been able to verify the preponderant use of the technique until the middle of the 19th century.

In my mind remain mainly the works of Chinese and Japanese art and perhaps the greatest icon of this technique, The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Woodengraving with multiple matrices made by Kanagawa in the 17th century. XIX, ~1830, 25x37 cm.
[Wikimedia source]

In Brazil, it is confused in the collective imagination with cordeis and in the works of Goeldi.

Twine as usually sold at fairs. [source: Wikipedia]

I made a short video where you can have an idea of how to perform this technique in Gimp, but I believe that the same steps can be done in Photoshop.

Drawing executed with the "Forks Flow Sharp Simple" brush, designed for wet-on-dry work.

I'm currently improving some of my digital brushes and this one in particular is giving me a lot of joy. This drawing was quickly done in an A3 format at high resolution with just the mouse... the marks it produces remind me of many interesting techniques, between graphic art and ink.

It is particularly difficult to catalog pictorial techniques in a digital environment, they are effectively another universe and sometimes it doesn't make much sense to talk about one technique or another. In my case, I follow instinct... looking for that line, that spot, that figure.

A possible idea to illustrate the my story The Most Short Story Of The World, about the poetry. I made this sketch with inkscape, spiro pen variations with X letter path; the watercolor with Mypaint and finally with Gimp I added HSV noise and I saturated a bit the colors.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7890281117588010702.post-59749929311794341832011-06-03T20:36:00.006-03:002023-01-09T12:35:01.530-03:00Tous Artiste, R. et L.

I'm drawing every day and everywhere many small birds... I began with the simple forms... and each bird drawn I insert the freedom scribbles on its form... This work I made for Cristine, my niece, they are imagery studies for my story about The Boy That Would Be a Fish.

These sketches were made with gimp, I've used a brush that I thought initially for crayon emulation, but I could see is possible emulates others techniques, as watercolor, it depends mainly of the blending mode that we apply on brush. In this case I've used the multiply.

The Boy That Would Be a Fish is a little story that I imagined another day ... I've began with some character design, only monochromes roughs and some scenes to create the scenario and imagery. I thought use a bit collage and ink drawing. All roughs are made in digital with gimp.

City illustration inspired on Anthony Green Art.

This week I'm success to do something a bit more elaborated for Illustration Friday... after that I read about works of painter Anthony Green I've decided to make this drawing with multiple view points... The basis is a small drawing, A5 format, made with a pencil B and after I colored on Gimp with my brushes for watercolors.
